Tūhono Tāngata

Connecting People Across Generations

Tūhono Tāngata is an intergenerational programme that brings older adults together with children and young people to connect through play, creativity and conversation.

With support from the Albert-Eden Local Board, we’ve facilitated weekly sessions in a local primary school where participants have built connections through games, storytelling, creative activities and shared moments of fun.

The programme is shaped by the strengths and interests of those taking part, with a focus on building relationships across generations in relaxed and meaningful ways. We’re now exploring how it could be adapted and offered in new schools, centres and community settings.

What Happens in a Session:

Each weekly session is shaped by the group and may include:

  • Open-ended play and creative activities

  • Storytelling, art, movement and games

  • Gentle challenges and collaborative projects

  • Opportunities for kōrero and laughter

  • Space for sharing skills, knowledge and lived experience

While the programme currently runs in a school setting, it can be adapted for early learning centres, community spaces, or anywhere that supports intergenerational connection.

Why It Matters:

In a world where generations are often disconnected, Tūhono Tāngata creates space for genuine, mutual connection.

It helps to:
✔️ Reduce loneliness and isolation
✔️ Build empathy and social confidence in young people
✔️ Celebrate the strengths and experiences of older adults
✔️ Share knowledge, skills and stories
✔️ Strengthen communities through play and participation

We believe every generation has something to give and something to gain and that meaningful connection is at the heart of wellbeing.

Who It’s For:
  • Older adults (65+) looking to connect, contribute and share

  • Children and young people of all ages, from early childhood to secondary school

  • Communities who value whanaungatanga, creativity and inclusion

  • Schools, kura and early learning centres interested in hosting intergenerational experiences

What’s Next:

We’re currently exploring where Tūhono Tāngata could go next.

This is still a prototype programme, evolving with every community it’s part of. Each new setting helps us understand how intergenerational connection can thrive in different environments.

If you’re curious, open-minded and ready to help shape something meaningful, we’d love to hear from you.
